AN APRIL DAY: LIFE AND DEATH

The death–a Cooper’s Hawk sped past the window, then carried off a Mourning Dove it had taken. The scene set for avian forensics. No mystery remained. Feathers on the driveway:

The life: glowing all around. Azalea and bluebells, hawthorn and chestnuts. Nor silent: male turkey gobbling vocally on a neighbor’s lawn.

You will see above that the cone does not deter the squirrel, it becomes a place to hang around.

CHESTNUT, HAWTHORN
