I was doing some chores when I looked out the window onto the garden. At eye level small gray sprites were flitting across the bush tops and heading toward our Colorado spruce. I grabbed my camera and raced outside where they were just moving into the spruce from a nearby lilac. A pair of Black-capped Chickadees were moving along with the Bushtits. They are our cheerful nomads for whom togetherness is a cardinal rule outside of breeding season. And they are tolerant not tribal, welcoming other species to their loose federation of feathered hunters. I have seen them accompanied by nuthatches of three different species at different locations, downys, warblers, creeper, three species of chickadees, even finches and sparrows on occasion. Come one, come all, more eyes makes us all safer from the lurking accipiter…Fall color in exotic maples at Joe Dancer Park.
