BIRDING IN A WINTER WONDERLAND

SACRAMENTO NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE.  Probably wildly unpopular with the locals when it was established, still derided by those who “hate the government,” I take the Sacto NWR as one of the finest services our national government has rendered to citizens, both feathered and simian.  Here are some of my favorite pics from a quick drive-through on Friday:

Now this here’s a tall tail.  Some might think the Pintail’s paying homage to heaven.  I think he’s simply making a point.

Shoveler flanked by Cinnamon Teal, all snoozing.  Green-winged Teal were plentiful as were Wigeon, Coot, Pintail, Gadwall, geese and Shoveler.

Male Gadwall.  The waterfowl density was impressive.

And that’s what attracted this guy:

One of several American Pipits on the grassy levees. And I only “saw” this one ibis.  Most migrate south in winter.

That vague bright spot is the sun behind its foggy shroud.
