Update on GG Park Great Horned; mystery gull

ghowl-2I have learned from various SF birders that Great Horned Owls have been on Strawberry Hill since at least 2004.  This year the adult pair raised three young. That a major animal kill due to park personnel using herbicides and other poisons has led to an official ban and a surge in predator populations in the park.  GH Owls are also breeding in the Presidio and Glen Canyon for sure.

 

 

IMG_9057Don Roberson weighed in on this gull.  He believes it to be a young, very worn Glaucous-winged Gull.  And if you want any info on birding Monterey, just check his superb website.

  1. Great Horned owls also nest in Sutro Forest on Mt Sutro. I haven’t seen the nest (others have) but I have seen the owls.
