SAUVIE IN SPRING SUNSHINE

My daughter and I spent a couple hours birding Sauvie Island’s roadsides this morning. Surprises, confirmations and plenty of bird sound greeted us there. Over forty bird species altogether.
Over 300 cranes still on the island. And all the bugling you’d expect on a sunny day One small flock of lingering Snow Geese. We passed seven active Osprey nests and two with Bald Eagles–that on less than a third of the island’s road miles. Nesting Canada Geese on uprights in Multnomah Channel. Swallows busy foraging. A Redhead. Cliff Swallows gathering mud for partially built nests. And a pileated busy with his morning drill(ing). Perhaps best of all, my daughter got to see her first Purple Martins on nesting “gourds.” And they were my first of the year.
Look closely at these PM condos, a martin is perched where the poles cross in the center:

Goose nesting:

The unmitigated morning sunlight brought fog streaming up from the saturated soil. Gray cranes beyond the scrim of gray fog–a well designed natural set piece, we thought:
