August (noun). Last full month of Northern Hemisphere’s summer. End of austral winter.
August (adjective). Venerable; impressive; admirable.
Today’s August and august gathering of birds in our small garden numbered over fifteen species, and included most of our regulars plus a promising visitation by feeding waxwings. Soon our berry and crab crop will be ready!
Whenever we eat lunch in our back garden–daily this time of year–we are monitored by a Steller’s Jay. Yesterday he perched over our head and gave out his red-tailed imitation, twice. If it had scared us, he would have swooped down for some of our chow.

That fuzzy downy must be a youngster. Sharing the feeder with a House Finch is male Lesser Goldfinch on the right.
