Five Wild Turkeys sauntered into our garden in South Salem today–mom and four gawky teens. I have seen this quintet foraging around our neighborhood for some weeks now. Their territory covers many blocks in our residential area and I have only once seen them in our 7-acre park.

About 1030AM I heard a flock of white-fronted geese flying over, couldn’t see them in the low clouds.
The American Goldfinches are now numerically dominant in our garden. They do not trust people, flying off the minute we appear outside. Not so our resident birds, who nearly ignore or taunt us. Nuthatches, chickadee, Bushtits, both jay species. Just yesterday the young Steller’s tried to frighten us with his Red-tailed Hawk imitation. Did he think he could then steal our abandoned lunch?
Meanwhile Environment Oregon wants help protecting Spotted Owl habitat:
Just before leaving office, the Trump administration stripped 3.4 million acres of protected habitat away from northern spotted owls. With more than 70 percent of their habitat already gone, these imperiled birds need all of the help they can get. Thankfully, we now have a chance to return those 3.4 million acres to spotted owls: The Biden administration recently began accepting public comments on a proposal to expand their habitat. Will you speak up to save spotted owls? Add your name. |
