CORRECTION: MY ALLEGED LESSER YEL IS ACTUALLY A SOLITARY SANDPIPER, A SCARCE MIGRANT HERE ABOUTS. I HAD SEEN A COUPLE AT DIFFERENT TIME MORE THAN A DECADE AGO IN BAY AREA, NEVER BEFORE IN OREGON. THANKS TO OBOLERS FOR THE CORRECTION!
This morning was our first 30-species dog walk at Fairview Wetlands. Gone are many winter ducks: no Gadwall nor pintail, only four shovelers instead of the daily dozens of a few weeks back. They have shoveled off to Buffalo? A Pied-billed Grebe was calling his spring yodel. Numerous Mallard ducklings were speeding around along with parental Canada Geese keeping their goslings in a tight armada formation. They have shoveled off to Buffalo? Swallows now out-number waterfowl. Four shorebird species, a high for me at this location. Saw my first cowbird at Fairview as well. Bad news for open cup nesters.
Part of the herd of Mallards:
Heard at least two bullfrogs, did not get a glimpse.
