MORE ON THE ATTRACTION OF OWLET HISSY FITS

Here’s a report from my friend and ace birder, Karl Schneck who lives a couple miles outside of Ashland, and comes equipped with a hospitable barn: “Good info reading your blog about the Barn Owls. I’m pretty sure mine are going to nest again this year in the box in the shop. I opened the box about a week ago and there was an adult inside that didn’t fly out with me only a foot away… so I’m guessing she is sitting on an egg or more. Last year there were 6 owlets and they were banded by a wildlife biologist. Whenever I opened the box to check on them I would get a lot of hissing. I attached a few of the photos taken of me holding owlets before their banding… the last one born seemed like a ‘runt’ and I was worried he wouldn’t make it, but he did. I let him ‘bite’ my finger but I kept my distance from those talons!”

  1. Good one! I especially like my description of being an “ace birder” 😝
