This image by Mel Clements, owl-man extraordinaire, was collected this morning in the Cascades east of Ashland. I must contain my envy, Great Gray rhymes with “great day” and even “great way” to start the year. Thanks Mel. Here’s his own ebullient summary: I wanted to check on the roadside snow levels and road conditions. The snow pack is disappointing at this time. It will be hard to fill the lake by early summer unless we get a banner snow fall soon. As we were driving along [the] Road, I spotted a Great Gray Owl just off the roadway. A 2021 NEW YEAR’S GGO SIGHTING!
There was no place to pull off the road. I turned on my hazard lights and turned off my vehicle’s engine. I managed about 10 quick photographs, when we heard a truck coming up behind us. I started up my vehicle and farther down the road, I was able to slow down and let the truck pass. Upon returning to the area a few minutes later the GGO was gone.
The GGO from what I could see in the short time I was photographing it, seemed to be in great shape.  I wish we could have spent more time with the owl, but I’ve learned to be happy with whatever time I have with a GGO.

I finished 2020 with 359 Great Gray Owl sightings and photograph opportunities. That is a new personal best year for GGO sightings. With today’s sighting I now have 1,099 documented life-time GGO sightings.
I’m looking forward to 2021….

Owl bet this is the best New Year’s Day bird photo anywhere in Oregon.
