Dec. 15, 2020, beware the Ides of December: Today the US government postponed any action on protecting monarch butterflies. The heinous excuse: too man other species need protection even more, so let’s take our time. In other words, I can’t rescue this person in the burning building because there’s somebody in the burning house next door.

I remember days when you could visit Pacific Grove, CA, in winter and see thousands of monarchs hanging on the drooping limbs in eucalyptus trees. No longer. The once abundant insect is in steep decline, especially here on the Pacific Coast. Here is what it used to look like:

Another area where they once wintered in large numbers: Pismo Beach.

Soon the US government is to rule on whether the monarch is an endangered species.
