There’s what must be an old gravel pit next to the Salem Toyota dealership. I will certainly spend some time there over the coming years, I hope. Both our cars are Priuses, and one is already 15 years old. I could find no real name for it online, so I have dubbed it “Prius Pond.”
In a brief birding walk along the pond’s south edge I saw two of the three possible heron species of western Oregon. Not bad.
Nothing surprising, except the gold hole floating in the water and all the gold balls that failed to make hole-in-one.
Did I mention the owl and two swans? Plastic.Placid though surrounded by cars and car dealers. Turns out that eBird calls it “Lake Capitol”.
In our garden today a young jay watched, jealously, as a flicker fed on the suet block. “Gee, I wish mom and dad had given me a beak like that!”
