CHAT, TERN AND AN EBIRD SURPRISE

Before I submitted my eBird lists I though the Yellow-breasted Chat on Muddy valley Road here in Yamhill County would be the bird of the day.  I was not far from four other birders as we traveled between stops in different cars (not too different as there a pair of lookalike silver Priuses in our caravan).  We saw said chat and heard all that he said, chortles, whistles, staccato warnings, warbles, trills, growls, much of the chattery repertoire.

Well, eBird thinks the Forster’s Tern we saw over the marsh at Baskett Slough was bird of the day. I had to ask the data base to give me the tern’s line to add to the list of expected species!  Who knew?  My old habits of birding along the Pacific Coast make me think of Forster’s Terns as ordinary spring and summer birds, ho-hum.  Ebird knows best.

For the first time this year I saw Rough-winged Swallows,  flying over and under the Bellevue Road bridge over the South Yamhill River, west of Amity.

RWB SHOWY (2)That Savannah Sparrow (below) was up on an overhead power line which I have never seen before…and singing steadily, his buzzy little spring tune.

Dontcha love the clear air we have these days?  Jefferson looks down on the valley:IMG_8742 (2)
