Our count here in the eastern part of Yamhill County is Friday. I was out checking my usual CBC territory today. The ponds are full, Baker Creek is high and muddy.
The large pond on Pheasant Hill Road was full of ducks. Ring-necked as far as I could tell…without my scope. About five dozen. Coot. Flicker. Ed Grenfell Park was birdier than usual: both kinglets, eight Steller’s Jays being loud, two flickers, downy, a Varied Thrush, Spotted Towhee. Along the road were kestrels and red-tails and lotsa starlings, five crows, juncos. On side roads: robins, both jay species. So over a dozen species in less than a hour and I didn’t walk a single hedge. I know those wrens were out there, skulking. No dipper today.
