CLIMATE CHANGED VS. BIRDS
Click here to see and listen to this report on five North American species threatened by the climate our species is altering. One is found only on the Pacific Slope. Another is a gloriously beautiful bird found in Oregon’s mountains…for now.
The feature is actually an online ad for a shoe company!
The Allen’s Hummingbird is our only species named for a Californian. Charles Allen was a resident of Rancho Nicasio in Marin County and often collected specimens for natural scientists back in his native Boston. He also was the first naturalist to find a Hermit Warbler nest. For that he had to climb high into a Douglas fir in the Sierra. A civil war veteran of the Union Army, he lived until 1930.
