We have few birds that nest in winter here in Oregon. Perhaps some Red Crossbills. Red-tailed Hawks. Occasionally Anna’s Hummingbirds. And, of course, the big bopper–Great Horned Owl. My birding friend, Lee French, sent me video and still image of female GHO spending her first day on her new nest…today. That mean she has one egg already. The eggs will hatch in sequence laid so the young will spaced several days apart. It will some days before she lays egg #2. Takes lots of protein to produce an egg so Mr. GHO is out there hunting for two right now.
The nest is along lower Dead Indian Memorial Road not far east of Ashland.
