Our McMinnville Parks & Rec birding class visited Tualatin River NWR yesterday (Sat) morning.  The rain waited until we left. Thanks to the birding gods.
Wr saw nothing surprising but most of what we had hoped for.  Hundreds of Cackling Geese.  Two adult Bald Eagles side-by-side in bright sun atop the large dead tree west of the visitors’ center. Many dabblers.  Handful of shorebirds.  A Sharpie sneaking through the trees along the river.  Also along the river a busy flock of gleaners: both nuthatches, yellow-rumps, Bewick’s Wren, chickadee, dozens of fly-catching waxwings. One of the wren’s even sang to us near the small, dried-up pond near the start of the footpath.

In the upper left image I have circled the Cackler so you can compare its size to the Mallards and Canadas nearby.  Click any image to enlarge.

The two images of blue heron in water and sleeping geese nearby in one illustrate how shallow the pond near the visitors’ center is.  The duck flotilla is mostly pintails with a touch of wigeon.
