The golden tints come from groves of quaking aspen, already in fall foliage and dropping their leaves which form shifting, milling drifts that are moved by the smallest breeze, or a passing boot.
Here is the yellow in near view, from rabbitbrush…and finally, one of the world’s tiniest lupine plant in the alpine zone around 9000′ elevation:
