Sunday Vern Beeson showed me Killin Wetlands, the former farm about to become a public open space.  There will viewing stations and trails overlooking about three hundred acres of wetlands and marsh.  We had to park along a dirt road, but just in the small patch of marsh we saw there were ducks, geese, heron and bittern.  Killin is west of Banks, Oregon in Washington County.

That same day I spent some time on the east and north sides of Hagg Lake.  Only one shorebird but the lake was afloat with boats, mostly motor boats.  Ducks and gulls loafed along the quietest shore on quieter inlets.  Geese grazed on the natural lawn covering a once-upon-a-time lakebed.  An Osprey watched fishermen, perhaps jealously. hagg-ospry

The best action was along Scoggins Creek.  The sunken creekbed meanders a mile or more across the desolate mudflats between upland forest and distant muddy shore of the shrunken reservoir. Scoggins’ warm and sluggish pools were aswim with frogs and small fish.  There, too, came the predators:

Before I got these shots I saw this garter snake swallow one of the small frogs.  Click on any image for full screen view.

Last image is the Spotted Sandpiper, the only shorebird I spotted at the busy lake.
