DESPITE THE HEAT…ONE COOL CAT

THE IMAGES HAVE BEEN BLOCKED BY SOME FOLKS’ BROWSERS SO HERE THEY ARE AGAIN…CLICK ON ANY ONE FOR LARGER VIEW:

Here is an email sent to me by Marieannette McCabe [hereafter “Mam”], a gardener, birder and enjoyer of all things nature…she lives just outside Ashland, Oregon.  This, for her, a first after several years in her house there:

It was the usual Thursday morning, ……well except for the smoke. When Mam woke up at 6:45 she considered rolling back to sleep so the smoky day would not be quite so long. BUT, oh no, it was THURSDAY and Thursday is garbage pick-up day on which her neighborhood has the unfortunate distinction of being the first one hit by the garbage truck promptly at 7 am. So it was up or else and “or else” was not an option on this day and believe it or not, it turned out to be the best garbage pick up day ever!………. In spite of being half asleep and bleary-eyed, Mam dragged herself to the living room and did what she always does first, open the blinds. That is when the double-take hit….
“WHAT? REALLY?” Yes – it is!  No more bleary eyes; Mam’s eyes were as wide as saucers as THIS was what she had been waiting for during the ten years she has lived here……”Take a breathe. Where is the camera? Oh god, where’s the camera and WHY is it never near when needed? !@$#!” Then a worse thought, “Oh no, the battery is still in the CHARGER!    Geezzzzz!”
Next thought: “Don’t miss the experience because you are pre-occupied with getting a picture..…….But oh……. LOOK…LOOK!”
There it was in all its majesty………just as Mam had imagined…………[note the tell-tale tell-ears with the black and white pattern unique to bobcats]

PRESENT, so in its element…….This is home and it is at ease…..

Walking self-assured along the edge of the field with an occasional look to the side, not missing anything……

Majestic……

Obviously Mam got herself and her camera together in time, though as you can see she was shaking a bit.  As the cat walked along outside surveying its territory just as its relative the lynx would do, Mam moved from room to room taking some of the pictures even standing in the bathtub to get a few shots.
And then the bobcat was gone………… Time to take a deep breath and savor the moment…..
John Kloetzel named this area Bobcat Glen when he was walking along the distant ridge and saw a bobcat in this valley. And Mam has been looking for one ever since!
Looking is the easy part. Since they are mostly nocturnal so it is dawn or dusk for viewing, finding is the hard part.
