NATIVE AMERICANS USED FIRE, STILL DO

The best environmental management tool Native Americans had was not the ax, or diggers….it was fire, still is.

Even where Native Americans managed to survive, the white man’s takeover in the 19th century put an end to much of the use of controlled burning.  Until then it would have meant park-like oak groves in the Willamette Valley.
