MT. HOOD IN THE HEAT

A visiting birder and her host and I went up Hwy 35 to Mt. Hood yesterday.  By mid-day, even at 7000 feet, it was so hot and sunny that bird life was hard to find.  But in the morning we found plenty of songbird action.  At Tollbridge County Park there was a young Dipper–note very stubby tail–in the East Fork of the Hood River.

Near Timberline Lodge we saw this Calliope Hummingbird:

The number of young birds was impressive: juncos, Chipping Sparrows, Purple and Cassin’s Finches, the dipper, two very dark yellow-rumped warblers with little yellow showing so far.  Western Bluebirds at about 2000′ elevation were feeding young in a nest box along Hwy 35.  Many of the Violet-green Swallows at Mt. Hood Meadows were youngsters.
