HORNED OWLS OF OREGON–A GALLERY

Our Klamath Bird Observatory counted 18 Great Horned Owls on our trip into eastern Oregon.  Herewith a gallery, plus one of a smaller stature.
These were the first we saw, along the auto route at Summer Lake.  Youngster hiding behind slender, bare trunk.  A second olwet was down behind the grass in foreground.gho-slk1We saw these owls in the woods east of Benson Pond, where the mosquitoes, BTW, were fierce.gho-bnsn1gho-bnsn2gho-bnsn3Owlets in white, Diamond Craters.  There we saw no adult bird though we tried to peer into the best hiding crevices in the lava.gho-diamndGHOs in woods at Malheur NWR Headquarters.  Clearly used to being watched  by terrestrial bipeds with big, long eyes.gho-hq1gho-hq2gho-hq3gho-hq4gho-hq5This pair of adults was seen along Hwy 78 south of Crane around sunset one evening.  Next night, they were not visible on same stretch of road at same time.gho-hwy782gho--hwy78Two of three owlets in tall cliffs west of Hwy 205 south of MP 44.  Adult bird flew to shaded perch about sixty rads away, third owlet withdrew into dark cavelet.GHO-HWY205GHO-HWY205BI went to visit this little guy early in the morning before we left Ashland on our KBO birding trip:ASH-WSO
