LINCOLN, WARBLERS AND FLORAL DISPLAYS

Oh to be in Oregon, now that spring has sprung.  No rain, believe it or not, but much happening after generous watering and a bit of warmth.  New bloomers include redbud, dogwood, camas and bluebells.  But better yet, the spring migration is advancing through the Willamette Valley.  Our Wednesday morning walk on the Linfield College campus brought me two new birds for the year and a another first.  New: Black-throated Gray Warbler and two Lincoln’s Sparrows.  The first: American Goldfinches in breeding plumage.  Singers this morning included: Bewick’s Wren, Song Sparrows, robins, White-breasted Nuthatch, flickers, Orange-crowned Warblers.  We saw a pair of Bushtits pulling moss and lichen from a tree limb for nest-building.

Here, one of the two Lincoln’s Sparrows, a difficult target…a small, quick, skulker who stays low and often out of sight.  Was the wing fluff meant as some kind of warning to another bird?ls lowls low2Singing wren:bw singzSee bottom of this blog for checklist from the morning walk.
