MY FAVORITE WRITING BIRDER…

Or birding writer, pens another one.  Not published in the U.S., sadly, but here’s the link to Jonathan Franzen’s appeal for saving our avian neighbors.

Franzen approaches that tantalizing mystery…why birds?  Why do they matter?  How can one care so much?  There are many reasons for the many birders.

Here’s just one smidgen of the explanation from Franzen the Birder: “Birds aren’t furry and cuddly, but in many respects they’re more similar to us than other mammals are. They build intricate homes and raise families in them. They take long winter vacations in warm places. Cockatoos are shrewd thinkers, solving puzzles that would challenge a chimpanzee, and crows like to play.”
