Last night was clear and cold. This Halloween day dawned clear and still cold. The bright sun soon bifurcated the world. Warm in the sunshine, cold in the shade. At Rotary Park the mature forest reflected and refracted the day’s division. The maples were largely nude as were some of the other trees. Hazel, oak and willows were fully clothed still. Even though we enter November tomorrow. Yellow leaves in full shone with a buttery glow. In the shade they merely looked wan.A shallow pool at Rotary Park, clotted with fallen leaves:
The unfallen, a hazel branch:
A hungry flock of small bug-eaters bounced around in the leaves and bare branches where the sun shone. The only birds I saw in the shady areas were Robins. Both kinglet species, Chestnut-backed Chickadees, Bushtits, a Red-breasted Nuthatch all moved rapidly about chasing breakfast. Like me, they could feel the warming sun as long as they stayed in the light. A calorie saved is a calorie earned. Down where I stood there were numerous small midges in flight, looking like flecks of animated ash. Perhaps there were some up at the heights of the sunshine and the feeding birds?
