Everywhere you look in nature the alpha predator is changing the world…as we have been for generations now.  It’s likely that humans helped exterminate North America’s megafauna…like the giant sloth.  We certainly killed off the Dodo and Passenger Pigeon.  The current extinction crisis around the globe is due is some great measure to our industrial pollution fired by use of fossil fuels and forest destruction.  Now evidence shows that we are affecting evolution in even small but measurable ways.  Great Tits are getting longer beaks…because of bird feeders.  This is only a worthwhile adaptation as long there are enough humans with income to spend on feeding birds.  There are no bird feeders in Raqqa or southern Sudan.  Only wealthy, stable cultures will support bird feeders, so the tits may have an uncertain future like the rest of us.

If you have not birded in Europe, the tits are members of the chickadee family and the Great Tit is about  Song Sparrow sized with a bold yellow belly and a black keel stripe.

Here is a photo I got of a Great Tit in England a few years ago, when beaks were smaller:GRT-TIT

  1. Saw Al Gore on talk show yesterday. He said land based invertebrates are moving north at 10 feet a day…………so it goes.
