“October Garden”

“In my Autumn garden I was fain
To mourn among my scattered roses;
Alas for that last rosebud which uncloses
To Autumn’s languid sun and rain
When all the world is on the wane!
Which has not felt the sweet constraint of June,
Nor heard the nightingale in tune.

“Broad-faced asters by my garden walk,
You are but coarse compared with roses:
More choice, more dear that rosebud which uncloses
Faint-scented, pinched, upon its stalk,
That least and last which cold winds balk;
A rose it is though least and last of all,
A rose to me though at the fall.”
Christina Georgina Rossetti

We are seeing the last of the year’s flowers: aster, rose, dandelion, Queen Anne’s lace, chicory.  The birds are here now to harvest the fruits from earlier blooming—dogwood, rowan, hawthorn, chokecherry.  Yesterday morning I awoke to many whinnies.  A flock of robins and waxwing shad arrived for the undeclared harvest festival.  By today the restless waxwings had moved on.  We now have two Golden-crowned Sparrows and a Song Sparrow, likely wintering neighbors.  The goldfinches remain most numerous but the Juncos are gaining on them.  A lone Bushtit appeared, ate and flew off.  How did that happen…poor lost soul.  Today the rains have returned.  Far better than the smoke and fire tormenting our friends in Sonoma County.  So far, nobody we know has lost a house.  Human and horse evacuations have been done.  We wait for further…
