Here is picture from my friend, Eric May, a long-time Euro-resident, now shifting back and forth between southern France and Switzerland…poor chap. A Portland native, Eric and I once worked together in San Francisco during one of his brief stints in the U.S.
This photo was taken September 6, 2017, at the Rüschlikon Marina on Lake Zürich, Switzerland. The Swiss German name for our grebes is the “Haubentaucher” by the way…it is an adult Great Crested Grebe with two young. With grebes and loons the world over, youngsters ride for free: 3 Beaks Sept2017 This bird is roughly the size of our Western and Clark’s Grebes but has that splendid headdress during breeding season. It’s common across northern Europe. I used to see them regularly in London’s Regents Park.
