Beats there a heart whose man is so dead that he would not be moved by fawn lilies in bloom? We have many fine wildflowers, some native and some weeds from far away. The violets are more intense, pussy’s ears are more intricate, trillium triumphant, dogwoods glow brighter while redbuds bleed for us. But somehow the simple, purity of the fawn lily never fails to stop my walk and a Lilliputian lily forest, abloom beneath the trees of the taller forest, brings a realization that sometimes nature knows best and we have only to agree and apprehend.
Behind the lily you can see the plant’s leaf, speckled in such a way it reminded somebody of a deer fawn.
Note below the trillium scads of young bedstraw plants are coming up. Soon enough they will torment those who wear sox or shoelaces or are furred by nature. This invasive plant will eventually produce zillions of tiny velcro footballs that will grab and cling to anything that offers transport to another invasion site.
These flowers were all to be seen at Joe Dancer Park today.
Can you spot the little birdy? I am sure this pair of Bushtits was looking for a nest site.
Bewick’s Wrens were about…and singing. This one even dropped to the ground.
The usual male Anna’s Hummingbird was again at the top of his sentinel post. Now I can see it is a maple. Did he pick the one upright twig with no leaves…or did he pluck the leaves for better take-off and landing? There was no other barren twig anywhere on this 20-foot tall tree.
