The Salem, Oregon, CBC is tomorrow and I went down today to locate some of the places we will be birding tomorrow.  At 1215pm there were four gull species on Lowe’s Lake off the eastern edge of the Salem Airport.  Also a scattering of the above image, sleeping Shovelers on the left, floating bottle on the right.

From there I went north on Airport towards Geer Park.  In addition to many Cackling Geese there were a few Killdeer out on frozen pools next to the parking lot, and as I got out of my car two Wilson’s Snipe lifted off from the grass and whirled off into space.kill-on-iceIn one of the out buildings at the nearby state prison, gulls galore, five species here.  prison-gullsWest of Salem along Hwy 22  large flock of Cacklers circled and landed … then a Great Blue Heron stared me down as I drove through the Hwy 22 X Hwy 99W clover-leaf.cac-upppcack-downgbh-hwy22

Then at Baskett Slough there were four birds swanning about on a narrow channel of open water…and they looked like Trumpeters to me.  No yellow on any beak and the forehead/beak angle was a straight line.  They were very far away, even for scoping.swansElsewhere at Baskett: Cacklers on ice…coyote cut-out…Eagles on the look-out…one of several nutria on ice harvesting food, can be shortened to “nutrice.”  Note the Cackler on right trying to keep its left foot from freezing.cack-0n-icecoyote-cutoutegl-faceegle-trwonutrice
