They looked like tennis balls on legs, not the sort of chicks to attract Donal Trump’s praise.  But precious and the first I’ve seen this summer. A family of California Quail on one of the dirt roads leading uphill from Scoggins Lake in Washington County.caqu-fam1-1280x960 caqu-fam2-1280x960 caqu-fam3-1280x960 malqwal-1280x960 malqwal2-1280x960

The lake’s surface was criss-crossed by motor boats, putting out noise and air pollution. Few birds could dare to share the water with the water skiers and partying boaters.  Just the Ring-billed Gulls, ever hopeful of a morsel or two tossed or lost overboard.
