ggo--medfordHere is a hunting Great Gray Owl one recent morning, hunting from a farm fence.  Janet Kelly, friend and birder, took this picture not far from here house which sits in oak chaparral south of Medford and west of Phoenix in Jackson County.  The area is at the foot of the Siskiyou Mountains.  West of the Kelly ranch is a small patch of known GGO breeding territory in the Siskiyous above the Applegate Valley…one of only two places we know these birds breed west of Interstate 5.  Elevation there is between 1500 and 1700 feet.

Normally Oregon GGOs range less than 25 miles from breeding or nesting sites during the year.  Canadian cousins migrate.  These southernmost GGOs in Oregon and California are sedentary.

Two Oregon bird festivals highlight Great Gray Owl trips each May: Ladd Marsh festival in LaGrande, Mountain Bird Festival in Ashland.  Click here for info on my book about the Great Gray Owl here in Oregon and neighboring Pacific states.
