All summer “Heron Pond” at Rotary Park in McMinnville was a weedy opening being colonized by willow, hawthorn and dogwood. Noe October’s above average rainfall here has resurrected the pond.  And Mallards didn’t take long to find the shallow water.  Over two dozen of them were there today.  This pond will provide some rich dabbling: floating seeds and spider eggs, drowned worms and beetles, floating fruit and berries.  Yum.  The water now covers at least two acres of land that has become overgrown in the past two dry summers. Be interesting to see which duck species comes along next. I’m betting Green-winged Teal or Wood Duck.MAL1 MAL2

While I walked through Rotary Park this morning everything was damp with dew.  Small droplets clung to the lower side of twigs or dangled off the low end of leaves that are on the trees.  These drops sparkled in the morning sunlight, little shimmering, glowing ovals.  The overall nature of the forest there has changed.  Moss that was dry soft fur all summer is now a water-gorged sponge covering trunks and downed limbs.BERREZE DEW DROP
