The worse the drought, the more I am drawn to what water there is.  Emigrant Lake, a fraction of its capacity under water.  Ashland Pond,  thankfully fed by a diversion of water form Ashland Creek which never quite dried up…last year.
This morning with a couple of other birders I saw my first Turkey Vulture of the year in Jackson County.  I may the last birder in the county to list one for 2015, they’ve been around for days.  The sun-warmed carcasses must be smelled by TVs all the way south above Redding.jan-tv2 (1280x960)TV-AG TV TURN
Also at the pond today was a Red-breasted Sapsucker.  Both the pond and lake are attracting their share of ducks these days, as well.  And his best clown in the hole act was his cousin, an ACORN Woodpecker…this one sans peanut.  Will this be the communal nesting hole this year or simply a roosting hole?
