I got to lead a morning field trip yesterday during a short visit to San Francisco.  We had an international group including two visiting Brits and a German woman recently transplanted to the Bay Area.  The weather was one of those days in winter that are achingly beautiful.  Even at Land’s End there was little wind, the sun was bright, the horizon a distant fuzz of fog out beyond the loon-line and fishing boats.

At North Lake in GGPark we were treated to all four “winter warblers.”   Yellow-rumps were the most numerous species of all.  But we also got nice looks at Townsend’s Warbler and fleeting glances at Orange-crowned and a female Yellowthroat sulking in the tules at North Lake.

There were at least two visible owlets in the Great Horned nest facing the buffalo paddock and the two adults were far up in the canopy of the same large Monterey pine. OWL-BIGG (1280x960) OWLETTS (1280x960)
