It’s now official according to those slow-moving bipeds that keep track of such things: the locally reknowned OR& male wolf and his family are designated the first wolf pack in western Oregon in decades.  Click here to read full story.

As we’ve learned from the re-introduction of wolves into Yellowstone, a wolf population can keep the elk from over-running riparian corridors and killing off the willows and other cover used by numerous small birds and other species.  Though long hated by humans fueled by ignorance and superstition wolves in fact make for a far healthier environment.  Any habitat without an alpha predator suffers eventually from a population explosion of some prey animals.  Think deer in Ashland, an artificial population density maintained by exotic plantings, irrigation year round and no predators.
