GREAT: A GREAT GRAY

Here are Russ Namitz’s pictures of a Great Gray Owl hunting from a snow-clad ponderosa pine during our Christmas Bird Count in the Ashland, Oregon, area, January 3.  It is likely the only one on any CBC in Oregon this year.IMG_0441 IMG_0442This bird is likely to be the only Great Gray on any CBC inside Oregon as Silverton is sometimes the count that scores a GGO but they missed this year.  Most years there is no Great Gray recorded in this state on a Christmas Count.  In the three states of WA-OR-CA there are never more than 4 counts that have GGO and that has happened only once in the past fifty years.

This bird was inside the Siskiyou-Cascade National Monument along Old Hyatt Prairie Road, north off Hwy 66…at the far southern edge of Jackson County and Oregon.

Jackson County is proud of its GGO population and our local Audubon chapter, Rogue Valley, is raising money to put up more nest platforms for these birds.  If you click here you will see our donation website where anybody interested can help out.  We’ve already put up nine new platforms in known GGO nesting territory but the treetops are the limit.  We’d love to put up more.

If you want to see your genuine Oregon Great Gray Owl, you should consider the Klamath Bird Observatory’s Mountain Bird Festival.  Click here for info.  Registration should open up next month.
