BEAUTY AND ELEGANCE ALOFT

Black Terns hawking insects in a high wind. Can anything match that for elegance, design perfection and beauty?
Today we watched three work up and down a reed-lined channel at Buena Vista in Malheur. The reeds broke the wind while the terns worked up the channel, rose, returned to the far end and flew up the channel time and again.B TERN ARC

  1. Terns – the Lear Jets of the bird world. I love them, but have never seen a black one. Gorgeous. Where else have you seen them?

    • They nest in large numbers at Klamath Lake…try Rocky Point. They’re found as far east as Ohio. Not a coastal tern, but inland, like the Franklin’s Gull.
