BIRD FESTIVAL SCOUTING–4

ALL PHOTOS IN THIS BLOG TAKEN BY EMMALISA WHALLEY.
I had a morning of scouting for the Bird Festival accompanied by Emmalisa Whalley who did a lot of the heavy lifting, getting our festival registration website up and running. We managed to get her a couple of lifers…and we saw a Black-billed Magpie carrying food though common wisdom is that this bird does not breed in Jackson County or at least not regularly. This bird flew into privately-owned oak savannah between MP 10 and 11 on Hwy 66 east of Ashland. Altitude probably about 2800′. We saw the bird fly in front of us just after watching a single Crow show his bravado by trying to harass two Golden Eagles at once. Humpf.
westerntanager We local birders see plenty of these bright male Western Tanagers every year. This guy had just bathed in Keene Creek above Little Hyatt Reservoir and the wet plumage looked especially bright in the full sun.

The cormorant nest tree at Hyatt Lake. It is not surrounded by water this year, leaving this colony vulnerable to land mammal predation from good tree climbers, and we have our share in the Cascades.
