SHOREBIRDS FAR FROM SHORE

The Pacific Ocean has a real shoreline, but an irrigation pond in Colusa County? Not sure…but there were SHOREbirds there yesterday as we headed home from our England visit:WESA FOUR (1280x960) This is a quartet of northbound Western Sandpipers in the irrigation ponds at the northbound Maxwell rest Area along I-5. In the same pond was a single Killdeer and a few Stilt. Barn and Cliff Swallows were hunting in the air, House Sparrows hauling dried grass into the rest area trees where they are building nests.

At San Pablo Bay NWR west of Vallejo we saw thousands of Dunlin and Western Sandpipers, plus resident Avocets. There were Godwits in a could places along the route as well.

Saw returned Swainson’s Hawks over I-5 in Yolo County.
