PLAYING (for) CHICKEN

Peter Thiemann and I were scouting Ferris Gulch Road for those legendary Great Gray Owls of Josephine County. We found no such owls this time…but we ended up in a dueling duet with some male Sooty Grouse. Our digital grouse would get a response but they stayed on their near vertical hillside and never showed a grouse feathers. Earlier we had the classic Mountain Quail sighting. They shashayed across the road then vanished into the manzanita thicket. Later one flew briefly in view form one tree to another. Zip, gone, phantoms in the forest.
