A CASCADE OF BIRDS

Am amenable Rough-legged Hawk…a reservoir full of birds but hurting for water…a strange-looking honker and very little snow. That was my day in the Cascades east of Ashland mid-day today.

This obviously mated pair of Canada Geese were on the far side of the lake, then flew past me. One of the two is very pale from the chest up to the beak, no dark on its neck or head was visible. It made all the usual Canada Goose honking sounds while in flight. Partially leucistic is my diagnosis.

CAGO-ODD3 (1280x960)You can see in the images: no ice on Howard Prairie at a time when it should be nearly full and frozen. It is both half empty and ice-free. Warm and dry winter has brought waterfowl up to the 4500′ elevation:coots-rnduS
