That’s Great Blue Heron on the outer end of the pier. And the small lump on one of the inner pilings is a Black-crowned Night-Heron. They are backed by freezing fog at dawn. Last night the overnight temps even here by the Pacific at Pt. Reyes dropped to 28.
Red-breasted Mergansers. They were in a small flock. Once in awhile they would all scutter across the water then dive simultaneously, apparently in pursuit of some school of fry that they alone could detect.
Great Scsaup were feeding along the shoreline with their heads underwater most of the time.
And in this picture you can see the lone Suef Scoter among scaup, the bird on the far left.
