OREGON OCTOBER

Just got home from an overnight trip to Eugene and back. Did a little birding on the way. One stop today was Plat I Reservoir east of Sutherlin. The other stop was at Wolf Creek County Park which was hitherto virgin territory for eBird, not a single checklist has been submitted for this park before my paltry list for a fifteen-minute stop this morning. The high point on the way north was a Pileated flying through the rain over I-5 near Merlin.

LINEUP Line up: Great Egrets along base of earthen dam at Plat I Reservoir, Douglas County.

RNDU-LAne coco Ring-necked Ducks at Lane Community College, Eugene where I stopped yesterday afternoon.

SNIPE PROBE Snipe in the mud at Plat I. I was surprised to see this bird a long way from the nearest cover. However, eBird thinks the lone White Pelican I saw was most unusual, didn’t even list that species a likely sighting this time of year. I’ve seen them there in late summer so I didn’t even bother to take a picture.

SNIPE-PLT EYEP1730953 (1280x1280) This is the pottery shed chimney in Roseburg where large flocks of Vaux’s Swifts stop over on migration and can be seen at dawn and dusk in spring and fall. It is on the south bank of the South Umpqua River. Taker central Roseburg exit and go left less than half a mile on Harvard, watch for smokestack on your right just past an elementary school.
