DISPERSAL TIME

The dog needed to get into the water, lots of water. I needed to go birding. So we compromised. Lots of shoretime at Emigrant Lake, then a little drive through some dry oak woods. Here’s evidence the dog approved of our compromise:HAPPY DOG (1280x1035)

It’s the time of year for dispersal, when fledglings and even some adult birds begin to disperse from their breeding or natal territories. That may be the explanation of thrasher and cuckoo in the southern end of the county. It certainly explains the Great Egret,EGRET EGRESS (1280x1280) two gull species and a handful of Western Grebe at Emigrant Lake today, also the White-tailed Kite which has been largely missing from the vicinity for a couple years. EBird now sees kite as a rarity for that location.KITE ABOVE1 (985x1280)

KITE WINGS (1280x1280) (853x853) I don’t believe any of these mentioned species bred around the lake this year. The Western Sandpipers are migrants heading south.

There was a small, loose flock of gulls loafing on the shore of the lake, just below the pioneer cemetery. I took pictures and then, upon study, realized there were two species next to one another. Take a look:GULLS-2 SP. The large gulls are Herring, the smaller with the rounder head is a newly fledged Ring-billed Gull. The larger gulls are in serious molting phase and their feathers look terrible. The large, flatish head, the sharply angled beak tip, the not-yellow legs make these Herring Gulls. Ring-billsd are two year gulls while Herring are four year gulls, meaning it takes them that long to reach maturity in their plumage.gulls sidebyside (1280x1280) (1280x1280) Herring is large gull on the right.
