A LITTLE FREEWAY BIRDING

I had to make a trip to Portland yesterday, but at least there was time for a little freeway birding en route. garden lake (1280x1280) This is Garden Lake Park in Creswell. Right next to the freeway so it is both easy to get to and bereft with freeway noise. But it does have a path through the woods around this lake which probably is an old rock quarry, now a local fishing hole. I looked out on the lake and saw three ducks, hmm, I thought, look like Ruddy Ducks. I had my camera, not my binocs.
stiff tail (1280x1280)

rudu young (1280x1280)Upon looking at the images I see that the stiff tails were misleading. These are juvenile Hooded Mergansers. That’ll go into the next edition of Freeway Birding. An even more pleasant surprise was at Plat-I Reservoir east of Sutherlin.martin gourds (1280x1280) Imitation nest gourds, installed since I last visited here a couple years ago. The gourds were being used as intendced: by a colony of Purple Martins!
Plus there were some of the expected reservoir birds: Canada Geese, Mallard, Great Blue Heron, Ring-billed Gull.gbh (1280x1280)
And my bonus shot for the day:P1650937 (1280x1280) A widow skimmer, I’m told.
