HOT AND COLD

This is the time of spring when there can be cold rain for awhile and then minutes later warm sunshine. The dog and I took a walk around Ashland Pond this morning. Neither of us was wearing a coat. Other sure signs of spring included the blooming feral plums and the singing Purple Finches. Their sweet, short songs came from atop willow and oak along Ashland Creek.IMG_4523 (1280x960)

The dandelion has begun its annual rampant reproduction which will not cease until the hard freezes of the distant autumn.

white-thrtd sparo This male White-throated Sparrow was singing at Ashland Pond this morning. It is the fourth straight winter at least one male has wintered there successfully. Last sporing two males were in singing competition during April. is there such thing as an annual vagrant? if so this species qualities here in Ashland.

In our garden the Juncos have begun their one-pitch trills. An Anna’s hummingbird comes by to check our flowers, leaves disappointed.
And down on the pond the wind riffles the feathery medallions on the chest of a Great Blue Heron.
