After decades on the Pacific Coast I know the quietest time to be out and about is a Sunday afternoon when the Niners are in the Super Bowl. Down at Ashland Pond around the second quarter it was just us and the muskrat and lots of birds.

Yesterday I spent time tracking this mighty mite, finally getting some recognizable pics of the tiny Ruby-crowned Kinglet.

Both a Peregrine and this Cooper’s Hawk have been frequenting the pond lately. COHA LOOK (1280x960)

COHA GOOD1 (1280x960)
Of course the Coop eats much smaller birds than the much bigger falcon.
Less than common birds at the pond: two singing male Wrentits (niot seen of course). Orange-crowned Warbler and White-throated Sparrow. Lesser Scaup continue.

  1. Watched the peregrine falcon pluck and eat a bird… at the pond just before you. Heron in nearby tree grooming its breeding plumage and man fishing with his young son [his first ever fishing trip] saw the otters twice. Love Ashland pond!
