WILDERNESS PARK REVISiTED

Birdsong was constant along Salt Creek that meanders through Wilderness Park. The sweet tweedles of the Rose-breasted Grosbeak male. Twittering of a pair of Barn swallows skeeter-hawking over the creek. House Wren, Catbirds and Red-eyed Vireos on all sides, each answering his neighbors. A few short, whispering calls fron an Indigo Bunting, which I would not be able to distinguish from the song our western Lazuli Bunting. An occasional loud ripple of sound from the Red-bellied Woodpecker, unseen in the tallest trees. Birds from the top: Rose-breasted Grosbeak male; Lazuli Bunting; Yellow Warbler male.

Below: Alder Flycatcher; House Wren; Ruby-throated Hummingbird; Blue Jay; Black-capped Chickadee. The Black-capped Chickadees were unusually silent with adults feeding newly fledged young.

Here on the prairie you have to look closely to see which way the water slowly flows in the streams crossing nearly level terrain. Elevation changes can be measured in inches per mile here in the flatlands, quite opposite what we have in western Oregon. Nebraska does slope upward as you go westward, Panorama Pt. is over 5400′ on the southwestern edge. On the eastern end the elevation along the Missouri River drops to about 800′. But the change is gradual.
